Two grasses, two publications

Bermudagrass comes from ESC-042. St. Augustinegrass comes from HORT-PU-170, read from a copy hosted on the Harris County AgriLife Extension site. Both say to mow weekly or as often as needed to prevent scalping and never to remove more than a third of the leaf: 1 to 2 in for bermudagrass and 2 to 4 in for St. Augustinegrass.

Feed when the lawn is growing, not on a date

For bermudagrass the first nitrogen waits until the lawn is growing and has been mowed 2 to 3 times (April to May on the calendar); for St. Augustinegrass it is at least twice mowed, in March to April. Rates are 0.5 to 1 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft, 1 to 4 times in the growing season. St. Augustinegrass is capped at 4 lb a year with the last feeding 4 to 6 weeks before first frost; bermudagrass applications run 4 to 8 weeks apart.

Preemergent herbicide is keyed to soil temperature and region

The St. Augustinegrass publication ties the summer-annual window to soil at about 55 F for 4 to 5 consecutive days and the winter-annual window to about 70 F for 5 consecutive days. The bermudagrass text says crabgrass germinates around mid-February in South Texas, early March in North and Central Texas and mid-March in the Panhandle, and to apply before that. It also says to skip the fall herbicide if you plan to overseed with ryegrass.

Water only when the lawn needs it

Both publications say to irrigate only when needed to prevent wilting or drought stress, or to replace at least 60% of evapotranspiration, and to turn irrigation off in rainy periods. The St. Augustinegrass sheet adds checking the irrigation system in March and April before turning it on. The dates on this page are statewide; the germination dates above differ by region, from mid-February in South Texas to mid-March in the Panhandle.
