About

About LawnYear.

LawnYear is a free, independent website for US homeowners that shows when to seed, fertilize, control weeds and mow a lawn. The windows come from university cooperative extension publications for 15 states: Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Texas, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Missouri, South Carolina, Kentucky, Indiana, Maryland, Tennessee, Alabama, Wisconsin and New Jersey. Each window links to the publication it came from, and all dates are approximate. LawnYear is not affiliated with any university or extension service.

Who we are

LawnYear is written and maintained by the LawnYear editorial team. We read published university extension guidance and put it in one place, with the source next to every date.

How we build the dates

  • Every window comes from a university cooperative extension publication. Each number links to the page it was read from.
  • Where a source gives only months, a window runs from the first day of the first month to the last day of the last.
  • Where a source gives explicit dates, we use them. Where it marks a chart or says “early” or “late”, the dates are our reading, and the note says so.
  • A task appears only where a source gives a window for it. Calendars cover a state as a whole, so the north and south of a state can differ from what you see.
  • All dates are approximate. Local weather, soil and your county extension office take precedence.
  • When sources disagree, we show both numbers and name both sources.
